What is Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)?
Emotion Focused Therapy is a short-term, structured, collaborative, scientifically supported psychotherapy, based on gestalt therapy, person-centered therapy, systemic therapy and attachment theory. Emotions are viewed as being central to self and relationship experiences and have important adaptive functions. Therapy focuses on enhancing emotional intelligence, including, emotional awareness, emotional regulation and healthy emotional activation.
Emotion Focused Couples Therapy (EFT-C) is one of the most scientifically validated types of couples therapy. It was developed by Sue Johnson and Leslie Greenberg in the 1980’s, based on adult attachment theory. Therapy assists partners to reprocess their emotional experience and reorganise their interactions to create and cultivate a secure bond of safety, trust and contact. This enhances relationship quality and assists couples to communicate and negotiate more harmoniously and effectively.
